INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana HB 1134 died Monday in the Senate. It was not brought forward for a second reading.
In response to the bill dying, Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA) President Keith Gambill said, “Thanks to educators, parents, community members and a broad coalition of Hoosiers who made their voices heard that HB 1134 has no place in Indiana.”
If HB 1134 had passed, instructors would have been required to post their curricula online for vetting, plus the bill would have restricted what Indiana teachers can or can’t say in the classroom about history, politics, and race.
Gambill added, “Components of this bill could return during conference committee, so we’ll stay vigilant, but we hope lawmakers will step back and collaborate with educators, parents, and others to create legislation that everyone can support for the benefit of all of our students.”
