COLUMBUS, Ind. – A former inmate at Bartholomew County Jail (BCJ), Lowell Smith, visited with Sheriff Matt Myers on Monday and left the sheriff almost speechless. In a different life when Lowell was serving almost four years at the jail, Myers had spoken with him about getting off of drugs, getting an education, and becoming a productive member of the community.
Walking into BCJ again Monday, Smith is sober, healthy, happy, and has a purpose. He paid his debt to society, got his GED, and now wants to help others. He is looking for two acres of land to start a “Garden of Hope,” a non-profit center for recovering addicts and their families.
Sheriff Myers said, “Lowell told me he would turn his life around and it appears he has. He certainly got my attention today and I am supporting him.” If there is anything you can do to help his program, contact Smith through the Salvation Army at 812-372-7118.
