FRANKLIN, Ind. – After a week-long jury trial, Darius Birk, 23, of Greenwood, was found guilty Monday of attempted murder, aggravated battery, pointing a firearm, and carrying a handgun without a license.
The charges stem from a March 13, 2021, incident where he first hit his girlfriend in the face while she was driving, and then shot her in the face.
“I just want to commend the bravery of the victim for taking the stand and confronting the man who tried to kill her,” said Johnson County Prosecutor Joe Villanueva.
The jury deliberated for almost three hours before finding him guilty of all counts. Birk will be held in the Johnson County Jail pending a sentencing hearing on April 22. He could get up to 60 years in prison.
