COLUMBUS, Ind. – A local man was taken into custody early Thursday morning after he nearly struck a Columbus Police Department (CPD) officer. Law enforcement was dispatched to the area of Central Avenue and Rockyford Road at around 3:30 a.m. in regards to a car with its hazard lights flashing.
While checking the stranded vehicle, the officers observed a car approaching that did not move over to the adjacent lane. The driver, Ismael Sanchez Alvarez, 34, of Columbus, started to swerve and almost hit one of the officers.
After stopping the suspect, police say they saw him throwing beer bottles onto the passenger side floorboard. He was taken to CPD headquarters and allegedly provided a 0.19% breath sample.
Alvarez was arrested, jailed, and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle with a BAC of .15% or greater, and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license.
