COLUMBUS, Ind. – A report of a vehicle fire inside an attached residential garage sent the Columbus Fire Department (CFD) to 4452 Mallard Point, in Tipton Lakes, on Thursday at about 12:30 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were visible from the garage area of the home. Crews brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes.
The homeowner told investigators that he was working on the fuel system of a vehicle parked inside the garage. He escaped without injury. CFD determined that fuel had ignited during the maintenance.
Officials said that three vehicles were damaged, one of which was parked outside the garage. The damage within the garage was significant. The blaze did extend into a portion of the interior living space, but firefighters prevented the spread to any additional living space.
The total estimate of damage to the home, vehicle, garage, and contents, is $200,000. One firefighter was injured at the scene. Investigators have listed the cause of the fire as accidental.
