COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to and quickly put out a fire at Cummins Inc. in the early morning hours on Monday.
Columbus Firefighters responded to Cummins at 1000 Fifth Street at about 2:45 a.m. after a report of a machine on fire, according to CFD’s Mike Wilson. Crews arrived at the large engine manufacturing facility and located the equipment that was reported to be on fire.
Smoke conditions inside the building created low visibility, but firefighters were able to identify a large piece of equipment on the production floor with flames emitting from the machine. CFD also reported the building sprinkler system had been activated in the area of the blaze. Using a CO2 fire extinguisher, crews were able to extinguish the fire. They then used ventilation fans to clear the smoke from the building.
The damages to the equipment were estimated at $50,000 and there was no extension of the flames to other equipment or the structure.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
