COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus emergency personnel responded to a vacant house fire on 10th Street early Friday morning. The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) was called to 1207 10th St., near Wilson Street, at 4:45 a.m., for a residential blaze, said Capt. Mike Wilson. When crews arrived they reported a working fire with flames visible.
Firefighters forcibly entered the home, where a primary search revealed it was vacant. As they worked to extinguish flames inside, other crew members ventilated the roof. CFD declared the fire under control about 20 minutes after arrival.
The property owner told firefighters the home had been vacant for five years and did not have utility services.
The damage was most extensive at the rear of the house. Heat, smoke, and damage from flames could be seen throughout the 800-square-foot home. The loss estimate was pegged at $50,000.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
