COLUMBUS, Ind. — Three officers with the Columbus Police Department (CPD) were recently awarded Letters of Commendation for their actions during two events that occurred last month. Columbus Chief of Police Michael Richardson awarded the letters to CPD officers Frank Dickman, Kelly Holley, and Sgt. Richie Howell.
“I am extremely proud of the actions taken by our officers during these recent events. Thanks to the quick thinking and actions of these officers, three residents, and a beloved pet are alive today,” CPD Chief Richardson said.
On June 14, Sgt. Richie Howell was off duty at his home when he learned that a neighbor was having a medical emergency. He quickly responded and provided life-saving measures to the person in distress. Sgt. Howell continued with assistance until the Columbus Fire Department and EMS arrived.
On June 19, officers Frank Dickman and Kelly Holley responded to an unknown medical problem in the 600 block of Maple Street. When they arrived, they found two adults and a dog unresponsive in the home. A generator was running inside and they surmised that the house was likely filled with carbon monoxide gas. Holley and Dickman opened the windows and carried the male victim outside. Columbus firefighters attended to the female victim. The officers then went back in to rescue the dog.
