COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) arrested a local man for driving while intoxicated early Thursday morning after he was seen driving through a road construction area with traffic cones stuck underneath his vehicle.
The suspect, Eric S. Federico, 52, of Columbus, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and a highway work zone violation.
CPD responded at around 1 a.m. to the area of Central Avenue and US 31 in regards to a possible drunk driver. A construction worker was able to get the suspect stopped after seeing the construction cones being dragged by his vehicle, police say.
While speaking with the suspect, officers said they noted his balance was unsteady and his breath had a strong odor of alcohol. After failing several field sobriety tests, Federico was taken to Columbus Regional Health for a blood draw and then arrested and transported to Bartholomew County Jail.
