INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) awarded $67 million in federal grants to more than 190 public and non-profit entities through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) program. The funding will be used to provide direct services and assistance to crime victims throughout the state. Over $3 million will be distributed to government offices and nonprofits in Bartholomew, Johnson, Jackson, and Jennings counties.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crimes provides the VOCA funding by way of the fines and restitution paid by convicted federal offenders.
The two-year grants will fund many Indiana initiatives including mental health counseling, transitional housing, crisis intervention, legal aid, and youth services. Some money will also be used to support victim advocates, sexual assault nurse examiners, and other victim-focused positions.
According to ICJI, Bartholomew County is due to receive more than $2 million, Jackson County gets almost $700,000, Jennings County was granted over $140,000, and Johnson County receives nearly $370,000. Click here or visit on.in.gov/VOCA for a list of all of the VOCA award recipients.
