COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Bartholomew County woman died Monday evening when her SUV was struck by a train near Indianapolis and Long Roads. Louisville and Indiana Railroad Company reported the crash just after 5 p.m. It is the second train fatality in Columbus in the past two days.
When first responders arrived they determined that the vehicle operator was deceased, according to the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office. The driver was identified as Iris Marie Castellano, 26, of Columbus.
Authorities say the initial investigation indicates that the train was southbound on the tracks that run along the east side of Indianapolis Road, and the victim’s SUV was westbound on Long Road.
The crash is being investigated by Columbus Police Department, with assistance from Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police.
