COLUMBUS, Ind. — UPDATE at 4 p.m. Tuesday: The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office has identified the two people that the Columbus Police Department (CPD) discovered deceased in their McCulloughs Run home Monday night as Julie Anne Schmidtke, 36, and Charles W. Schmidtke, 41. CPD found them dead, inside 2272 Sumpter Ct., after they received a report that the woman’s estranged husband had allegedly entered the residence and possibly shot her, according to authorities.
Coroner Clayton Nolting pronounced both dead at the scene and ordered autopsies, which were conducted Tuesday. Julie Schmidtke was found to have multiple gunshot wounds to her body and Charles Schmidtke died from a single gunshot to the head. The investigation remains active.
Original Story at 9:09 a.m: The Columbus Police Department (CPD) is conducting an investigation after two people were found dead from apparent gunshot wounds inside a residence on Monday evening.
Officers responded at around 8:55 p.m. to a 911 call of a reported shooting at a home in the 2200 block of Sumpter Court, according to CPD’s Lt. Matt Harris. When they arrived, they found two people deceased inside with gunshot wounds, per CPD.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, detectives believe that there was an argument involving two people before the shooting. Investigators said that there are no known threats of violence that would affect community safety.
The names of both deceased persons will be released by the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office once family notifications have been made.
