FRANKLIN COUNTY – A southeastern Indiana man accused of shooting his wife and a Franklin County deputy has been identified after charges were filed in Franklin County Circuit Court.
Gregory C. Guilfoyle, 31, of Brookville, was charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of neglect of a dependent after an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, December 23.
The preliminary investigation determined that Franklin County Deputy Arin Bowers responded to the area of State Road 1 and US 52 just after midnight after receiving a report that Guilfoyle was walking in the area while holding a small child, according to Indiana State Police (ISP).
When the deputy tried to speak to the suspect, Guilfoyle allegedly pulled a handgun, fired at Bowers, and struck him with at least one round. The officer’s body armor prevented him from being injured.
ISP says deputy Bowers returned fire and struck Guilfoyle at least once. He was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. The 23-month-old female child was unharmed and was taken into the custody of the Indiana Department of Child Services.
Law enforcement then conducted a welfare check on the suspect’s wife, Hannah M. Guilfoyle, 23, who is also the child’s mother. Deputies discovered that she had sustained a gunshot wound. She was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition, per ISP.
The initial inquiry indicates that Gregory Guilfoyle supposedly shot Hannah Guilfoyle at the residence before walking away from the home with the child. The investigation is ongoing.
