COLUMBUS, Ind. – This year’s Columbus Public Safety Academy is almost full, only five spots remain to be filled as of Tuesday. If you would like to learn more about law enforcement, fire, and EMS, in Bartholomew County, sign up online for this course now. The class starts on March 2. More information can be found here.
The free 11-week course is designed to educate residents about public safety operations. Classes are held each Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
In previous classes, participants learned about the Columbus Police Department (CPD) Bomb Squad, SWAT Team, Narcotics/Vice Units, and more.
This year, your opportunities will include firing police weapons at the CPD gun range and using the Columbus Fire Department’s equipment to cut open a wrecked vehicle in a mock extrication scenario.

Participants must agree to undergo a criminal history check. Graduates are eligible for volunteer opportunities at CPD.
