COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Police Department (CPD) said Friday that a man who shot and wounded a dog at his property in East Columbus did not violate Indiana criminal law.
The Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the police report as well as a response to public inquiries and determined criminal charges were not appropriate. The wounded dog was later euthanized.
On Thursday, CPD responded to a residence in the 700 block of Glendale Drive after receiving a report that a dog had been shot. Police spoke with the property owner, who told law enforcement that he used his handgun to shoot a dog that he said was attacking his dog. The man also told officers the same dog had attacked and injured his dog on his property two days before.
“While we sympathize with both parties involved in this incident, it is the responsibility of law enforcement to apply the law without utilizing personal feelings or opinions,” CPD Public Relations Officer Lt. Matt Harris said in a statement.
Anyone with additional information, including video footage regarding this incident, is urged to contact CPD at 812-376-2600.
