COLUMBUS, Ind. –The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Branch 3071 today announced the celebration of its annual Juneteenth Jubilee. The event will be held Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the downtown entertainment district on Fourth, Fifth, and Franklin Streets in Columbus.
This year’s theme, “Juneteenth Jubilee: A Celebration of Education,” adds an education element to the celebration of the holiday. It kicks off with an opening ceremony at noon at Fourth and Franklin streets that includes a proclamation by Mayor Jim Lienhoop, a “Lift Every Voice and Sing” melody sung by the Columbus Community Choir, and a Juneteenth re-enactment by Spotify artist Yoruba Kikiloma-Mason from Louisville. The “One Drop” art exhibit will return to the Columbus Visitors Center, and a DJ will provide music
The Bartholomew County Public Library will host three different “story times” and the Kids Zone, featuring inflatables and snow cones on the Library Plaza. The health corner will have information about diabetes.
Dads will be honored that Father’s Day weekend in “The Men’s Den,” a special area where they can take a break and play in a corn hole tournament. The Bartholomew Historical Society will have a booth displaying American Black history, and a group of community members will host a red food booth that will privide information on the significance of red foods.
The event closes with a community Tik Tok dance, the announcement of the art auction winner, and a moment of remembrance. A full schedule of events will be available soon on the NAACP website.
