COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Bartholomew County man was arrested for resisting law enforcement after he attempted to flee the courtroom before being given a jail sentence on Monday afternoon. Trevin LittleJohn, 35, of Columbus, was tased several times before being taken into custody.
Bartholomew County Courthouse security was called to Superior Court II at 2:30 p.m. in advance of a defendant potentially being taken into custody after getting a jail sentence. Judge Jon Rohde was in the process of giving the defendant, LittleJohn, his 200-day sentence when the suspect declared he was not going to jail, according to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
As the court security approached LittleJohn to handcuff him, he ran to the back of the courtroom, per law enforcement. The court security officer tried to physically restrain LittleJohn, but he used courtroom chairs to obstruct the path and was able to make it into the hallway. After unsuccessfully trying to tackle the suspect, the officer radioed other security officers of the escape attempt.
A probation officer grabbed LittleJohn near the top of the stairs and warned that he was going to deploy his Taser if the suspect did not stop resisting. The man began to move down the stairs and was tased. That tasing and a subsequent tasing had little to no effect on him, per the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). After allegedly approaching the officer, LittleJohn was tased a third time and fell to the floor. The suspect was placed under arrest. The initial officer suffered minor abrasions to his arm, according to BCSO.
The would-be fugitive was transported to Columbus Regional Health for evaluation/treatment and later released. As LittleJohn was being transported from CRH to the jail, corrections staff say they found him attempting to strangle himself using the seatbelt of the corrections transport van. He was taken to jail on the charge of resisting law enforcement where he remains in custody.
