EDINBURGH, Ind. — A family dog was saved by first responders after a house fire in Edinburgh on Tuesday.
Just after 7:30 p.m., German Township Volunteer Fire Department (GTVFD), Edinburgh Fire and Rescue, and the Clifford Volunteer Fire Department, along with a Columbus Regional Health (CRH) EMS ambulance were dispatched to the 4500 block of West Newton Dr. in the Pleasant View addition for a residential blaze. A deputy with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrived on the scene to see smoke billowing from the home with a working fire in the back. The deputy said there was possibly a trapped dog inside.
While fire departments were still responding, the GTVFD chief requested a second alarm which summoned Harrison Township, Columbus Township, and Hope Fire Departments. Amity and Nineveh Fire Departments were also requested to respond.
While attacking the flames, several crews searched for the dog, which was found hiding in a back bedroom. It was removed and given oxygen on the scene and his condition improved, according to firefighters. The dog, which was standing on his own, was taken to an emergency vet by one of the occupants of the home.
Approximately 20 minutes into the incident, fire crews were pulled out of the house and Tower 221 from Columbus Township was utilized to spray water from above the house. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews returned inside to extinguish the remaining hot spots. No firefighters or civilians were injured.
The house was a total loss and was valued at approximately $200,000. The contents inside were estimated at $75,000. The homeowners did not have insurance. The Bartholomew County Fire Investigator will determine the cause of the fire after examining all of the evidence.
