COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bartholomew County Emergency Management (BCEM) is alerting area residents of the potentially dangerous and very high temperatures that are predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) says an Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from Wednesday at 8 a.m. through Thursday at 11:59 p.m. for Bartholomew County and all of south-central Indiana. Temperatures will be in the 90s with Heat Indexes approaching 100-110 degrees.
BCEM says there is no rain in the forecast for Wednesday or Thursday.
Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
Heat Safety Tips for Humans:
- Make sure to hydrate – drink plenty of water or sports drinks
- Protect – Wear light clothing, use sunscreen, and wear sunglasses
- Plan – Schedule outdoor activities in cooler parts of the day, and take frequent breaks
- Monitor – Check on young children, the elderly, and pets
Animal Safety Tips:
- Animals can die of heat stroke within 15 minutes
- Cracking the windows does not help, the inside of a vehicle still gets dangerously hot
- During hot weather, keep your pets at home
