COLUMBUS, Ind. – A local man was taken into custody on multiple charges when he fled from the Columbus Police Department after he was observed driving the wrong way on 7th Street near Central Avenue on Friday evening.
Officers were already conducting a traffic stop on 7th Street at around 9:30 p.m. when they saw a vehicle coming slowly toward them going the wrong way. They ordered the driver, Marcos Morales-Cortez, 26, to pull over. He momentarily complied but then supposedly ignored commands and sped away and the chase was on.
The suspect struck a median near 10th Street and Central Avenue and then hit a car near 17th Street and Central Avenue before exiting his vehicle and fleeing on foot. The other driver involved in the crash sustained minor injuries.
Cortez was apprehended by CPD a short time later and placed under arrest. While speaking with the suspect, police noted that his eyes seemed bloodshot and glassy and he allegedly had the strong odor of alcohol on his breath.
He was transported to Columbus Regional Health for a blood draw and later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on the preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement in a Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, Operating a Vehicle Without a License, and a Bartholomew County warrant.
