VERSAILLES, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) has been notified of a scam making its rounds through the area and officials are now alerting residents in central and southern Indiana.
Scammers are accessing church directories and contacting people, pretending to be the church’s pastor. The fraudsters request that you buy gift cards and send them to the “pastor” who then “gives them to people in need.”
The con artists prey on people who are generous and want to help others. Be cautious of anyone requesting you purchase gift cards as that is a common form of payment used by grifters.
ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Stephen Wheeles in Versailles warns individuals to diligently research before donating to any charity that contacts them unexpectedly.
