NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The Jennings County Health Department (JCHD) is warning residents about a virus being spread by mosquitos.
According to the JCHD, there has been a mosquito testing positive for West Nile, a single-stranded RNA virus that causes West Nile fever. The symptoms of severe infection (West Nile encephalitis or meningitis) can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, stupor, disorientation, tremors, seizures, paralysis, and coma.
JCHD reminds residents to take precautions by emptying all standing water around their homes and property, using repellent, and wearing long sleeves and pants while outside in the evening.
Bug wipes are available at the health department, 245 Norris Ave., Mondays through Fridays, while supplies last.
