COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus Police Department (CPD) investigators are looking into the death of a Bartholomew County man after witnesses say the victim’s vehicle went into a pond on Tuesday morning.
First responders were called to North Indianapolis Road and Kenhold Drive at around 11:30 a.m. after a car was reported in the water. When CPD arrived, the back of the vehicle was somewhat visible but sinking.
Officers joined several others already in the pond trying to pull the driver from the car. However, the group was not able to get him out at that time.
The Columbus Fire Department and Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team soon arrived. They deployed rescue boats and divers and removed the driver, the vehicle’s only occupant. Medical personnel performed life-saving measures on the driver, identified as Christopher Pool, 46, of Columbus, but he died at the scene.
The Accident Reconstruction Team and investigators were also called. Their initial reports indicate that the driver was traveling south on Indianapolis Road when, for an unknown reason, he veered off the roadway, through nearby bushes, and ultimately into the pond.
CPD detectives are working with the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office to determine the circumstances of Pool’s death.
Several people sustained minor injuries attempting the rescue. They were all treated and released.
