COLUMBUS, Ind. – A historic bridge in Bartholomew County has closed indefinitely after being deemed unsafe during a recent inspection.
Bridge #73 over the Flatrock River on County Road 900N between County Roads 200E and 300E was shut down indefinitely on Monday morning.
County Engineer Danny Hollander said significant rust on the structure has left a lack of confidence in its safety.
Hollander mentioned that repairs “do not look promising” and estimated the cost at $6 million. When county commissioners asked about a bridge replacement, he informed them that the nearly 100-year-old bridge has been named historically significant, so the structure must be rehabbed.
As for now, motorists should use alternate routes.
