SEYMOUR/GREENWOOD, Ind. – A Jackson County attorney was apprehended in Johnson County on Tuesday, June 3, on a warrant for multiple felony counts of corrupt business influence, theft, and tax evasion.
The Indiana State Police (ISP) investigation began in 2024 when it was reported that attorney Jason Smith, 45, of Seymour, had not filed personal or business tax returns in the last few years.
The Indiana State Police-Special Investigations Section determined that Smith is an attorney who owns Smith Law Services and Floyd Harris Holdings, LLC. Records allegedly show that since 2018, Smith has not paid any income tax personally or for his business.
From 2019 to 2023, Smith reportedly deposited over $2.5 million into his Smith Law Services bank account and over $1.3 million into the Floyd Harris Holdings account. The ISP investigation determined that he did not pay taxes on the income deposited into those accounts and that he used those accounts to make numerous personal purchases.
In October 2024, detectives served a search warrant at Smith’s residence and law office on North Chestnut Street in Seymour. During the search, investigators located a suspected controlled substance in his residence.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Jason Smith on the following charges.
- Corrupt Business Influence (Level 5 Felony – 1 Count)
- Tax Evasion (Level 6 Felony – 5 Counts)
- Theft (Level 6 Felony – 5 Counts)
- Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class A Misdemeanor – 1 Count)
Officers with the Greenwood Police Department located Smith and arrested him without incident. He was incarcerated in the Johnson County Jail, pending being transferred back to Jackson County, where he will soon face an initial appearance in court.
