INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana State Police (ISP) Crash Reconstructionists worked a deadly accident on I-70 westbound near the 83-mile marker (North Split) on Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., ISP Dispatchers began receiving several 911 calls about a crash on I-70. Early reports were that a semi had lost an entire load in the roadway, and the driver was unresponsive. When troopers and other first responders arrived, they located the driver of a semi-unconscious and not breathing. The man was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
The collision involved a semi tractor-trailer and one passenger vehicle. None of the occupants in the passenger vehicle suffered serious injuries.
A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of one semi braked abruptly. The flatbed trailer, loaded with sheets of plywood, broke loose from the trailer, and the load went forward, striking the back of the cab of the semi-tractor.
At this point of the investigation, troopers believe a vehicle made an abrupt lane change in front of the semi, causing the driver to brake.
All westbound lanes of I-70 were closed for nearly an hour.
