GREENSBURG, Ind. – Indiana State Police (ISP) detectives from the Versailles Post, at the request of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in rural Decatur County on Wednesday afternoon.
At around 2:30 p.m., two Decatur County deputies spotted a vehicle possibly related to an earlier criminal incident in Ripley County. A Greensburg Police Department officer responded to assist. The suspect in the Ripley County event, thought to be in the vehicle, was also wanted on an active arrest warrant for an unrelated matter.
The car, occupied by two adult males and one adult female, was pulled over on County Road 400E, just north of County Road 300N, near Greensburg. Officers positioned themselves to conduct a high-risk traffic stop and called each occupant out of the vehicle individually.
A passenger, believed to be the wanted suspect, exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and allegedly pointed it toward officers, who discharged their firearms toward the armed man, causing him to drop to the ground.
Law enforcement got the other occupants to safety and began rendering aid to the suspect. None of the officers or any bystanders were injured in this incident. Despite life-saving efforts, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics. He was identified as Travis Manlief, 39, of Greensburg.
ISP says the officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras, and each patrol vehicle also had in-car cameras. All video devices were activated during the situation.
