HOPE, Ind. – “Talking Tombstones” is back on Friday, September 19, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the Hope Moravian Cemetery, 202 Main St., in Hope.
Join the Bartholomew County Historical Society and Yellow Trail Museum for a fun experience learning about county ancestors through first-person actors. The stories are interesting, educational, and entertaining. Learn about the history and stories of God’s Acre, one area of the cemetery that will be featured at “Talking Tombstones II.”
God’s Acre is unique. It is the historic section of the Hope Moravian Church Cemetery, and has 1,070 graves. Burial is by the choir system, where burials are by gender. There is a section for boys, unmarried men, married men, girls, unmarried women, married women, and paupers.
This follows the early Moravian custom of burial as done in Herrnhut, Germany, the place in Saxony where Moravians found sanctuary from religious persecution.
Tickets are available for purchase on Eventbrite, at the Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum, 524 Third Street, at the Yellow Trail Museum in Hope, or at the cemetery on the night of the event. They are $15 in advance and $20 that evening. Children, five and under, are free.
“Talking Tombstones II” is a fundraiser for the Bartholomew County Historical Society and Yellow Trail Museum.
Due to the terrain of the cemetery, this event is not ADA accessible. While there are many actors on the pathway, there are some off the path. If you require seating, bring your own.
