COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) awarded a letter of commendation to Sgt. Brandon Decker on Thursday. At the presentation, he was reunited with the one-month-old he had helped save from choking two weeks prior.
On September 26th, dispatch received a call about an unresponsive baby at an apartment on Salzburg Boulevard in Columbus. A calm Sgt. Decker responded to the scene, where he found an infant who was not breathing and lethargic. Immediately recognizing that the child could have been choking and appeared to be losing consciousness, he tried to clear any airway obstructions. However, the baby still was not breathing.
With the infant in his arms, he moved outside, where he was more accessible to arriving medical personnel, and continued to try to clear the airway by giving back blows. Thankfully, the child began to cry and breathe. When EMS arrived, he passed the baby’s care to ensure the best outcome. The infant is now doing well.
The baby and family came to thank Sgt. Decker on Thursday as he received a letter of commendation from Chief of Police Steve Norman, who said, “When I heard of what Sgt. Decker had done, I was not surprised because that is exactly the type of person he is. I’m proud to have him with CPD and of the work he’s doing to help our community.”
