COLUMBUS, Ind. –The City of Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety approved a measure to enhance the vacation policy for Columbus firefighters during their meeting held at Columbus City Hall on Tuesday, November 4.
The approved policy change will take effect on January 1, 2026, and will add two additional vacation days to each year of service level within the current vacation framework. The proposal for increased vacation days was a collaborative effort between the Columbus Firefighters’ Union and the Fire Department Administration.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the health and wellness of firefighters who work demanding 24-hour shifts. It also aims to bolster recruitment and retention efforts within the department. By providing more time off, the department seeks to enhance off-duty rest, reduce physical and mental health stress, and combat potential fatigue and burnout among its members.
Columbus Fire Chief Andy Lay expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am thankful to the City Administration and union leadership for their unwavering support in prioritizing the well-being of our firefighters. This initiative is not only a step towards improving the work-life balance of our current members but also serves as an attractive benefit for future firefighter candidates.”
