NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) has honored Sgt. Austin Grunden for his exceptional actions during a medical emergency on Friday, November 14.
Grunden was dispatched to the area of North Elm Street near West O & M Avenue at around 8:40 p.m., after Jennings County Dispatch received a report of an unconscious driver inside a vehicle. An off-duty Jackson County EMS member was already on scene and believed the individual to be suffering from an overdose.
Sgt. Grunden and Officer Holt arrived moments later and located a female driver slumped over inside a running vehicle. She appeared awake but extremely lethargic, displayed constricted pupils, and struggled to speak—clear signs consistent with opioid impairment. A four-milligram dose of Narcan was administered.
The two NVPD officers remained with the driver, monitoring her condition until Jennings County EMS arrived. The individual was transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for further treatment.
