COLUMBUS, Ind. — UPDATE: The Flood Warning has been extended until midnight tonight, per BCEM. As of 3:22 p.m., between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen and additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible.
ORIGINAL: The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Warning until 5 p.m. for parts of central Indiana including Bartholomew, Decatur, Hancock, Rush, Shelby, and Jennings counties. Check for alerts in your area here.
Additionally, a Wind Advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. tonight. Storms will be most severe until 5 p.m. — Bartholomew County Emergency Management (BCEM) is expecting damaging winds, lightning, flash flooding, and the potential for a brief, weak tornado. The monthly tornado test in Bartholomew County has been cancelled for today due the potential for severe weather. Overall, rainfall amounts are expected to be in the 2-3 inch range with some areas receiving amounting in the 3-4 inch range. As of 11:14 a.m., between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Indianapolis, Columbus, Shelbyville, Lawrence, Greenfield, Greensburg, North Vernon, Rushville, Vernon, Adams, Cumberland, McCordsville, Edinburgh, Fortville, Knightstown, Hope, New Palestine, Flat Rock, Milford and Westport.
A flood warning is in effect from Saturday morning until early Tuesday morning for the Driftwood River near Edinburgh. Minor flooding is forecast.
At 10:30 a.m. Friday the river stage was at 3.1 feet. It is expected to rise above flood stage Saturday morning to crest at 13.2 feet early Sunday afternoon. It is then forecast to fall below flood stage Monday afternoon.
