COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Historical Society’s long-running tradition of featuring homes and buildings throughout Bartholomew County is returning on Saturday, September 16, with The Open Door Tour. There is also a VIP Opening Night event on Friday, September 15.
Partnering this year with Landmark Columbus Foundation, the 2023 version features mid-century modern homes, gardens, and structures. The tour includes world-renowned private homes and businesses, many of which have never been open to the public. Featured architects include Eero Saarinen, Harry Weese, local designer Ted Meijers, and Dan Kiley’s Miller House gardens.
Get tickets at the Bartholomew County Historical Society, Viewpoint Books, Columbus Area Visitors Center, and online. Proceeds benefit the Historical Society.
The Open Door Tour ~ Midcentury Modern, is a self-guided walking tour featuring 8-9 buildings and collections. Have you ever toured a Harry Weese house? Want to see what is behind the large hedge on Washington Street or wander around the Irwin Conference Center designed by Eero Saarinen?

The VIP Opening Night event on Friday, September 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. is $50 and includes the Saturday tour sights. Friday evening will be an opening celebration at the historic Ruddick-Nugent Mansion at 1210 16th St., with light bites, beer, wine, and entertainment. Guests 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult, and those 10 and under are admitted free.

This walking tour has limitations on accessibility at most locations. Ticket holders are encouraged to spend a leisurely day touring while taking time to dine at local restaurants and shop at downtown stores.
