COLUMBUS, Ind.–A local woman was taken into custody after smashing her sport utility vehicle into a garage at a Columbus home early Tuesday morning. Public information officer Lt. Matt Harris with the Columbus Police Department says officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Pine Hill Drive about a vehicle that had collided with a house. Investigators found the vehicle had struck the attached garage of the home, causing significant damage.
Authorities say the driver was Melissa Calderon, 26, of Columbus. Police suspect alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident as they claim her speech was slurred and she had trouble maintaining her balance. She was checked out by paramedics but refused medical treatment at the scene. A portable breath test was administered and allegedly registered .230 percent, which is nearly three times the legal limit.
Calderon was transported to Columbus Regional Health for a blood draw and later placed under arrest for her trip to the Bartholomew County Jail. She was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
