SEYMOUR, Ind. – A man has been apprehended for two counts of attempted murder following an incident at a public library where he reportedly discharged a firearm. The Indiana State Police (ISP) says the shooting occurred at the Jackson County Public Library, 303 W. Second St, in Seymour, at around noon on Wednesday.
The library director recounted hearing a noise and rushing to the scene, initially believing a display case had fallen, only to discover an armed man. According to ISP and agents from the FBI Field Office in Indianapolis, the individual allegedly came in through the library’s front entrance and immediately fired one shot from a long gun towards two employees working nearby. It resulted in one of them sustaining non-life-threatening injuries from broken glass.
Authorities stated that the suspect, Emiliano Cuevas-Bravo, 18, of Seymour, then ascended to the second floor and placed the gun on the floor. A library patron subdued the gunman and restrained him until law enforcement arrived.
Seymour Police Officers took the suspect into custody. Officers from the Indiana State Police, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Excise Police, and Columbus Police Department provided valuable resources during the investigation. The entire event lasted about two minutes.
Additional information gathered during the investigation indicated that Cuevas-Bravo supposedly went to Seymour High School earlier in the morning to target a Seymour Police Department School Resource Officer. He never entered the school or made contact with the officer before eventually leaving and going to the library.
Cuevas-Bravo was arrested and incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail on preliminary felony charges of Attempted Murder (2 counts), Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, and Intimidation. He will soon face an initial hearing in the Jackson County Circuit Court.
The multi-agency investigation is ongoing. Authorities remained on scene throughout the afternoon.
