INDIANAPOLIS – Automated speed enforcement has been implemented for drivers on I-465 near the Clear Path construction zone, marking the official start of Indiana’s ‘Safe Zones’ program on Monday.
In 2023, the Indiana General Assembly rolled out a new program to enhance safety for construction workers and drivers by targeting speeding in active work zones. Natalie Garrett, the Strategic Communications Director for INDOT, shared that the program employs truck-mounted radar and camera technology to identify vehicles that are traveling 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit in work zones.
When a violation is detected, a photo of the rear license plate is matched with state BMV records for confirmation, and a notice is sent to the vehicle’s registered owner. The penalties for violations escalate with each offense: the first is a warning with no fine, the second incurs a $75 fine, and the third and subsequent violations result in a $150 fine. These fines are deposited into the state’s general fund, and a collections process is established for any unpaid ticket.
Drivers can contest a violation if they believe it was issued in error. Two enforcement trucks are active in the Clear Path zone, with a maximum of four allowed at any time. It is important to note that tickets are only valid if there are construction workers in the work zone at the time of the violation.
