COLUMBUS, Ind.–Duke Energy and Vectren Corporation, members of Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS), are continuing their efforts this week to educate customers of the tactics utility scammers use to steal money from them and to outline steps to guard against falling prey to these schemes.
UUAS, a consortium of more than 100 electric, water, and natural gas companies, continues to raise awareness of utility scams this week with their “7 Scams in 7 Days” campaign.
Customers who have been contacted by someone prompting you to pay your bill immediately to avoid disconnection, or those who suspect that they have been victims of any other type of fraud, should contact their utility company or local law enforcement authorities.
UUAS reminds you to never purchase a prepaid debit or gift card to avoid service disconnection or shutoff. Legitimate utility companies do not specify how customers should make a payment, and they always offer a variety of ways to do so.
Consumers can also utilize the Vectren.com live chat option or call 1-800-227-1376 to reach Vectren’s contact center, which is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
