GREENWOOD, Ind. — The next star in open-wheel racing could be a 15-year-old girl from the Greenwood area. Amy Hollowell is a sophomore at Center Grove High School and also a four-time national champion in the World Karting Association, the top series in American kart racing. She won every race on the schedule in 2015 and set the fastest times in transponder history in the series. She’s been given the nickname “Chinese Dragon” because of her distinctive helmet design and the fact that her parents adopted her from China as a baby.
Holowell has raced at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Virginia International Raceway, Daytona International Raceway, Summit Point Raceway, National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park, Roebling Road Raceway and the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research. At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course she is the Grand National champion in two different classes.
“I grew up with an older brother racing, and he inspired me. I grew up at the race track so much that it has become like my home. It’s my 10th year racing, and my third year road racing on the big tracks. I love meeting new people at the tracks and I love the battles that my competition and I have. I absolutely love everyone at the World Karting Association Road Racing Series.” said Amy. Her dream is to earn a driving spot in Formula 1. Her immediate goal is to make a splash in the newly established Formula 4 Series.
In addition to motor racing, Amy plays basketball and track at school. She plays the saxophone in band, and is planning to become a mechanical engineer, a career she believes will make a better driver.
