NORTH VERNON, Ind. – UPDATE: Two individuals have been arrested by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office in reference to the shots fired call in Spencer Township on Tuesday. Alex Mullikin, 26, of North Vernon, and David Eggerts, 18, of North Vernon were both taken into custody.
The two are being held in the Jennings County Jail on multiple charges. Mullikin was booked theft, and Eggerts was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, theft, criminal recklessness with a weapon, and an Indiana Parole Warrant.
Original: Deputies with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched very early Tuesday morning to an address on County Road 1000W in Spencer Township, in reference to shots being fired and a suspicious vehicle. When Deputies arrived on scene they located a vehicle parked in front of the residence and later determined it had been stolen from Medora. Multiple agencies quickly arrived to assist in looking for the suspect who was thought to have left the area prior to law enforcement arrival.
During the course of the investigation, officers learned the homeowner came home and discovered the vehicle in the middle of the roadway. He checked his house and property looking for the driver and eventually found a male subject hiding in his yard. The suspect allegedly opened fire on the homeowner with a small caliber firearm. The owner of the house reportedly returned fire, at which time the suspect fled.
At this time deputies do not believe anyone was injured during the exchange of gunfire. The investigation is ongoing.
