FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a Facebook Marketplace fraud. The scam apparently includes falsely listing legitimate properties for rent on the website.
Sheriff Duane Burgess says that authorized property owners and management companies may list a property with a monthly cost of $2,095 on their own website. Scammers then take that same information and put a bogus listing on Facebook at a much lower cost. The fraudsters also request that people use “Rently.com” to acquire an access code to view the property.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to confirm who actually owns a property before meeting someone there or providing any personal information.
