UPDATE AT 7:00 PM: One person was flown to the hospital following two crashes on I-65 about 10 miles south of Columbus Monday afternoon.
ISP troopers say the first accident involved a semi that went into the median. The second crash occurred when a trucker failed to stop for traffic that had slowed due to the previous crash.
The Volvo semi collided with the rear of a Freightliner. The Volvo ran off the road and struck a guardrail before stopping on the shoulder of the interstate.
The driver, Timothy Eric Lill, age 37, Alberta, Canada, was trapped in the Volvo and was later flown to an Indianapolis hospital. Lill suffered serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening, troopers said.
No other injuries were reported.
The northbound lanes of I-65 were shut down for about two and a half hours. The crash investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE AT 2:39PM: Indiana State Police are reporting that one lane is now open on Northbound I-65 near the 58 mile marker. Police say traffic will be slow in area for crash cleanup.
COLUMBUS, Ind. — Northbound I-65 about 10 miles south of Columbus is temporarily closed after twos semis crashed Monday afternoon.
Indiana State Police are on the scene near the 58 mile marker.
One person was trapped inside their vehicle and a lifeline helicopter was dispatched to the area.
Motorists are asked to use exit 55 and S.R. 11 to avoid the backups. The northbound lanes are expected to reopen around 3 p.m.
