COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Police Department (CPD) personnel were patrolling in the downtown area on Saturday when a woman approached them and advised that her neighbor’s house was possibly on fire. She said she had heard the smoke alarms going off for around 20 minutes and told them that she believed people were still inside the home.
Deputies responded to the 800 block of Union Street and located smoke coming from a house. No one answered the door so they forced entry and found a confused man inside. He was evacuated and taken to Columbus Regional Health for evaluation of minor injuries.
CPD arrived with a fire extinguisher and a small fire in the kitchen was put out. Other responding units evacuated six other residents on the rear side of the structure.
The Columbus Fire Department was summoned and they completely extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure from the heavy smoke.
“This is an example of the pinnacle of public service, courageous action that ends up saving someone’s life,” said Sheriff Matt Myers. “I would like to recognize and thank these deputies and emergency officers for their actions and service to the community.”
