The Monarch Festival – Festival de la Monarca in East Chicago is a joyful, bilingual community celebration built around one of nature’s most remarkable journeys: the annual migration of the monarch butterfly from Canada and the United States to the Oyamel fir forests of Mexico. Each late summer, as monarchs pass through northwest Indiana on their way south, Kosciuszko Park transforms into a vibrant blend of science fair, neighborhood block party, and cultural festival.
The 9th Annual Festival de la Monarca will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time, and it is free and open to all. Families, students, nature lovers, and neighbors come to learn about the monarch lifecycle, explore hands-on exhibits, and enjoy a day filled with music, dancing, art, and delicious food. The event is led by The Nature Conservancy in Indiana and hosted by the City of East Chicago, with a strong focus on making conservation fun, approachable, and relevant in an urban setting.
Beyond its fun, the festival carries a deeper meaning. The monarch is a powerful cultural symbol in Mexico and across Latin America, often associated with ancestry, memory, and return. The festival honors those connections, creating a space where environmental education, Latino heritage, and community pride come together in one colorful, family-friendly day.
This event would not be possible without our gracious host, the City of East Chicago -- and partners such as Audubon Great Lakes, the Field Museum, Save the Dunes, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, and the Wild Ones Chapter at Gibson Woods.
We look forward to seeing you and celebrating the beloved monarch butterfly that so enriches our lives!
