Hoosier Energy urges customers to cut down on unnecessary power usage

SOUTH-CENTRAL, Ind. - According to Hoosier Energy, high demand for electricity and tight power supplies throughout the Midwest are causing a serious power supply emergency for central/southern Indiana and Illinois, including local REMC customers.

SOUTH-CENTRAL, Ind. - According to Hoosier Energy, high demand for electricity and tight power supplies throughout the Midwest are causing a serious power supply emergency for central/southern Indiana and Illinois, including local REMC customers.

Hoosier Energy is urging the public to cut back on electricity usage immediately until further notice. 

Company officials released this statement: "Your cooperation will help ease the dangerous strain on the region's power supply. Without swift, voluntary conservation of electricity now, the region could face temporary power blackouts."

Residents and businesses should:

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights
  • Postpone using major appliances such as dishwashers and clothes dryers
  • Turn your thermostat to 68 or lower for heating
  • Turn down your water heater

The affected electric cooperatives in south-central Indiana are:

  • Bartholomew County REMC
  • Johnson County REMC (JCREMC)
  • Jackson County REMC
  • Southeastern REMC
  • Decatur County REMC
  • Rush/Shelby County REMC
  • South Central Indiana REMC
