COLUMBUS, Ind. - In Tuesday's local elections, residents voted to renew the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation's (BCSC) operating referendum, funding competitive teacher and staff compensation and school safety personnel for an additional eight years through 2034.
The funding will allow BCSC to continue building on successes in student achievement, teacher retention, and maintaining safe schools.
In local County Council contests, Janae Garner-Kelley became the first Democrat to win a seat in 40 years. Republicans won all of the other County Council races, and Carl Lienhoop secured his 7th term as Bartholomew County Commissioner.
The BCSC renewal keeps the same maximum tax rate of $0.156 per $100 of assessed value that voters approved in 2020, while generating a lower average annual levy of approximately $9.5 million.
BCSC Superintendent Chad Phillips released the following statement after the votes were counted:
“Tonight, our community once again demonstrated its commitment to our children, staff, and schools by renewing BCSC's operating referendum. Strong public schools are an anchor for our community, and this result reflects a shared understanding that the success of our schools and community are connected. We are deeply grateful for your support."
"The referendum allows BCSC to continue keeping great teachers in our classrooms and students safe in our schools. We also want to recognize the many volunteers and supporters who helped share information about the referendum. Thank you for investing your time and energy in BCSC.”
“This community support comes with high expectations, and we take that responsibility seriously. We remain committed to transparency and accountability in how these funds support our staff and schools. On behalf of our students and staff, thank you for your continued belief in BCSC and the future of our community.”
