NORTH VERNON, Ind. - Following recent vandalism in restrooms at North Vernon City Park, officials have confirmed that suspects were identified, and criminal charges were issued.
At the September 24 Board of Public Works meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Bobby Lawson reported that multiple restrooms were damaged over the past week.
Three security cameras were out of operation during the incident, but secondary functional cameras captured sufficient footage to identify the perpetrators. Police Chief Keith Messer confirmed the suspects are juveniles and have been charged in connection with the destruction.
Restroom repairs and cleanup are underway, with specialized cleaning contractors evaluating damage to ductwork and the air system.
Mayor Shawn Gerkin and board members directed city officials to forward cleanup cost documentation and Servpro quotes to the Jennings County Prosecuting Attorney. The city will review repair estimates to determine whether to file an insurance claim or seek direct court-ordered restitution through juvenile court proceedings.
