COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Columbus Police Department (CPD) and other emergency crews were on the scene of a train/van collision on Indianapolis Road on Friday morning, March 6.

Officers and other first responders were called to the area of Indianapolis Road at the 11th/Brown/Lindsey Streets roundabout at around 9:15 a.m. They found a van that had been struck by the train, a stopped train, and a downed railroad crossing signal.

Based on the initial investigation, the van was traveling eastbound on Indianapolis Road approaching the roundabout. While the vehicle was crossing the railroad tracks, the front of the northbound train hit the rear passenger area of the van. The crash caused the van to spin around and strike the railroad crossing signal.

The driver, a 56-year-old Indianapolis man, was not injured. Still, he was transported to the hospital for further evaluation by emergency medical services.

The wreck caused the roadway to be closed for just over an hour.
