NORTH VERNON, Ind. — Perceptions Yoga, Mindfulness, and Art has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) through the 'America250' Grant Program, supporting a community-wide mural project commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The America250 program, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Indiana General Assembly, awarded grants to just twelve organizations across Indiana from more than 100 applicants. Perceptions was selected for its “Creative Aging Community 250 Mural Project,” which engages older adults and community members in designing and painting a large-scale public artwork rooted in local history.

The mural will be installed on the historic Paris Crossing School Gym, transforming a valued community space into a visual narrative of Jennings County’s past. The design highlights important landmarks and stories along Indiana State Road 250, including Eleutherian College, Paris Crossing School, Neils Creek, Jefferson Proving Ground, and historic events such as John Hunt Morgan’s Raiders traveling through the area.

In addition to the IAC grant, the project has received a $2,500 contribution from the Jennings County Community Foundation. Montgomery Township, which operates the Paris Crossing Gym as a community center, is also a key partner in hosting the installation.

The total project budget is approximately $15,000. While grant and foundation support provide a strong foundation, additional funding is needed to complete the mural and related community programming.

Community members, businesses, and organizations are invited to contribute and become part of this historic project. Contributions will support materials, installation, protective coatings, and community engagement activities. Donations can be made online at www.perceptionsyoga.org.
