WHITELAND, Ind. — The Whiteland Town Council recently paused action on a proposed ordinance regulating golf carts and utility task vehicles (UTVs) on municipal streets.
Based on preliminary discussions, the ordinance is intended to balance community mobility requests with local traffic safety standards.
The proposal would permit licensed drivers with insurance to operate compliant golf carts and side-by-sides on local roads with speed limits under 30 mph, establishing an annual $50 registration permit through the police department starting January 1, 2027.
The council voted to table the measure until October to evaluate compliance costs associated with state statutory requirements:
State Signage Mandate: Indiana law requires specific entry-point signage on affected public roads before enforcing local golf cart regulations.
Cost Review: Initial estimates place sign production and installation costs between $150 and $200 per sign, prompting council members to request a detailed financial assessment.
Community members can share input at the next Town Council meeting in October, where revised placement costs and ordinance language will be presented.
