BUTLERVILLE, Ind. - The Jennings County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) was dispatched to a report of shots fired at a residence on County Road 555E in Butlerville on Saturday, October 17, just after 6 p.m.
Deputies spoke with a male subject who reported that his wife, identified as Cynthia Scroggin, 61, of Butlerville, was extremely intoxicated and had pointed a handgun at his head and pulled the trigger, but the safety was engaged. He said that when he tried to flee, Scroggin fired a shot at him.
JCSO found Scroggin inside a camper on the property and refused to come out. Lt. Thomas Mellencamp, a trained crisis negotiator, persuaded her to exit the camper peacefully after about 40 minutes.
After exiting, the suspect, who appeared highly intoxicated, became combative with deputies. She was transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for evaluation, and while there she allegedly threatened to kill deputies.
During the investigation, a K-9 partner, Jaycee. located a spent shell casing believed to be associated with the incident.
After being medically cleared by hospital staff, Scroggin was transported to the Jennings County Jail, where she is being held on the following preliminary charges:
- Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)
- Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)
- Pointing a Firearm (Level 5 Felony)
- Intimidation (Level 6 Felony)
- Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor)
- Disorderly Conduct (Class B Misdemeanor)
As the investigation continues, more charges are possible in this case.
